about

swimming is a collection of music and soundscape serving as a fundraiser for the Bagida'waad Alliance, an Indigenous Water Protector group led by the Chippewas of Nawash. ALL PROCEEDS from the sale of this album will be directed to this not-for-profit organization.

I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DONATE DIRECLTY via e-transfer to bagidawaaddonate@gmail.com.

Chi miigwech to Natasha Akiwenzie and Bagida'waad for accepting and welcoming this project as a fundraiser. It is an honour.

For more information on the group's work, please visit www.bagidawaad.ca

These songs (for the most part) are about my favourite freshwater swimming places in what is now called Grey and Bruce counties. I can't imagine the world or my life without these magic, special and healing places. I worry immensely about "development" (attention Grey Highlands Council!) and the long-lasting and irreversible effects such short-sighted decisions will have on these beautiful natural spaces. This is why I am releasing these pieces in support of Indigenous stewardship of the most precious resource we have--fresh water.

The album art is by Niizhokwe (Shaelynn Recollet), my friend and an incredible multi-disciplinary artist. Stay tuned for a subsequent fundraiser featuring her work for this project. I am thrilled and moved that she submitted so many pieces, more than are featured here, to accompany the music. Most of this work was drawn from memory, in some cases after only one visit to these places. Genius much?!

If you are a musician and recording artist, I cannot endorse Lisa Conway and Heather Kirby enough. They are living definitions of imagination, patience and talent. I encourage you to seek them out and employ them for your next project!

I implore listeners to give generously if you are able. It would mean the world to me and everyone involved in this project.

I am challenging us to raise 5 figures for Bagida'waad!

I vow to include Truth and Reconciliation in all of my future efforts, musical or otherwise. And to Indigenous leaders like Natasha, I say, "your will, my hands."

Peace and love, Charlie
